Lemon Festival 2021: History

At the end of the 19th century,  a  community of hotel owners in Menton decided to organize an event to attract visitors to the town during the winter season. At the end of the 1920’s,  the town Menton became the dominant export centre of Lemons across Europe. From the community of hotel owners, one of the members proposed the idea of establishing a separate exhibition of flowers and lemons in the garden area of his hotel.

This idea proved a masterstroke in 1929, the Lemon parade was appreciated by the visitors, the bunch of carts beautifully decorated with oranges and lemons drew the attention of a lot of visitors. Within the next ten years, the Lemon Festival gained huge popularity that the local Mayor expressed to change the event’s name to the Menton Lemon Festival and organised an event of Oranges and Lemon trees in the Biovès gardens located in the centre of the town.

When is the Menton Lemon Festival 2021?

The famous Nice Carnival and Lemon Festival occurs at the same time. The Lemon Festival 2021 will start on Saturday 13th February 2021 and run until Sunday, 28th February 2021.

The Lemon Festival is celebrated similar to the carnival, looks like a giant float made of citrus fruit. These floats are led by dancers, music groups, entertainers, folk groups, fire-eaters, brass bands and confetti. The entire town has a carnival atmosphere with stilt walkers, fire-eaters, acrobats and so much more, who give breathtaking performances across the town. Visitors can also enjoy various exhibitions and events like firework shows,  art shows, fruit exhibitions, market stalls, and lots of parties.

Want to visit the lemon Festival in Menton?

You can purchase tickets for the Lemon Festival online prior to the event. Also, you can purchase the event ticket from the Office de Tourisme. If you want to attend the evening events, you can buy the tickets in advance as the ticket desk may close before the event begins.
